How Chamco Helped a Major Oil and Gas Company Standardize Air Packages Across Multiple Locations

Project Background

In 2013, one of Canada’s largest crude oil and natural gas producers faced challenges with consistency in its air compressor systems across its oil pad fields due to varying engineering preferences and site-specific requirements.

The company needed to develop a standardized air compressor package to streamline operations, reduce engineering time, and reduce spare parts inventory across multiple locations.

The Challenge

  • Inconsistency in Equipment

The oil and gas company had various engineering and procurement teams, and compressor packages were inconsistent when it came to ordering air packages across different sites.

  • Oversupply of Spare Parts

The inconsistency in the air packages across the customer’s sites led to inefficiencies and an increased inventory of spare parts. They needed to reduce the variety of parts and equipment to ensure interchangeability and ease of maintenance across different well-pad sites.

  • Collaboration Over Competition

Unlike typical RFQ processes, the company sought a partner to collaborate on developing a standardized solution rather than simply opting for the lowest bidder.

Why the Oil and Gas Company Chose Chamco

As a long-time customer, the company knew they could rely on Chamco for our expertise, experience, and ability to provide high-quality engineered air compressor systems. Chamco’s willingness to collaborate and customize solutions to meet their specific needs further ensured we were the go-to partner for all their air compressor needs.

The company wanted the Sullair ES-6 air compressor. The ES-6 is the only direct-drive compressor of its size on the market, capable of up to 10 horsepower, and known for its high reliability, incredible uptime, and low maintenance. Chamco, as the exclusive supplier of the Sullair ES-6 in Western Canada, was the logical choice to work with.

The Solution

  • Developing Standardized Air Packages

Chamco worked closely with the customer to design a standard instrument air package. This package included two Sullair ES-6 compressors, a wet receiver, a dryer with filtration, a dryer receiver, and specific electrical panels within a self-framing building and skid.

  • Customizing and Streamlining Orders

By establishing must-have specifications and eliminating unnecessary variations, Chamco ensured that each order could be easily replicated whenever the customer needed a new air package for their field pads. This approach significantly reduced engineering time and costs for subsequent orders, simplified the procurement process, and lowered maintenance costs.

  • Volume Discounts

Chamco offered a discount for bulk orders, incentivizing the company to purchase multiple packages simultaneously, further optimizing costs and production efficiency—a win-win situation for both Chamco and our customer.

The Results

Since the collaboration began in 2013, Chamco has built around 35 standardized compressor packages for the oil and gas company.

The standardized packages have reduced the variety of spare parts needed, simplifying maintenance and inventory management. The robust ES-6 compressors have ensured high uptime and low maintenance, critical for the company’s unmanned well pad sites.

“By focusing on a collaborative partnership and understanding the company’s specific needs, Chamco provided a reliable and cost-effective standardized air solution.”
