Both oil-free and oil-flooded compressors can be designed with downstream mechanical filtration to remove all impurities in the air. However, oil-free compressors don’t introduce oil or other lubricants into the air compression process, which provides additional protection for highly sensitive applications.

What is Oil-Free Compressed Air?

Compressed air purity is defined by ISO 8573.1 purity classes. Oil-free applications require Air Quality Classes 1 or 0.

  • ISO Class 0 is based on the specifications of the particular application, below the ISO Class 1 maximum total oil concentration, which both oil-free and oil-flooded compressors can achieve.
  • The ISO 8573.1: 2010 table outlines the standards for each compressed air purity class. The table contains the maximum contaminant levels for each compressed air quality class and the test methods and analytical techniques for each contaminant type.
