Frequently Asked Questions

A heatless desiccant dryer is a type of compressed air dryer that removes moisture using desiccant materials such as activated alumina or silica gel. Instead of relying on external heat, a heatless compressed air dryer regenerates the saturated desiccant by diverting a small portion of the dry compressed air back through the system. This purge process makes heatless dryers efficient, low-maintenance, and ideal for applications requiring simplicity, reliability, and dew points as low as –70°C.

Heatless desiccant dryers typically come in twin tower designs, though single tower and inline configurations are also available. Unlike heated desiccant dryers, which use external heat or blower-assisted regeneration to reduce purge air loss and improve energy efficiency for high-volume applications, heatless dryers rely solely on a portion of dry compressed air for regeneration. This regeneration method makes heatless dryers a dependable, low-maintenance choice for smaller or intermittent-use systems where external heat sources are impractical.

Additionally, heatless dryers can achieve compressed air purity levels defined by ISO 8573-1:2010, the international standard for compressed air quality. Depending on the application, these dryers are capable of meeting Class 1.2.1 for –40°C dew points and Class 1.1.1 for –70°C dew points.

Heatless desiccant air dryers are commonly used in industries and environments where moisture-free compressed air is critical.

Typical applications include:

  • Instrumentation and control systems: Where even trace moisture can cause malfunctions or corrosion.
  • Pharmaceutical and food processing: Where clean, dry air is essential for product quality and regulatory compliance.
  • Paint booths and powder coating: Where moisture in the air supply can cause defects such as bubbling or poor adhesion.
  • Medical and dental air systems: Where ultra-dry air supports hygiene and precision.
  • Low-temperature or outdoor installations: Where freezing moisture in compressed air lines must be avoided.

A heatless desiccant air dryer removes moisture from compressed air using a dual-tower system filled with moisture-adsorbing desiccant, such as activated alumina or silica gel. As compressed air flows through one tower, the desiccant captures and holds moisture from the air stream, delivering dry air downstream. While one tower is drying the air, the other is in regeneration mode.

Instead of using external heat, heatless dryers regenerate the saturated desiccant by purging it with a small portion of the already dried compressed air. This purge air flows in reverse through the saturated tower, carrying moisture out through an exhaust valve.

The heatless air dryer switches between towers on a timed cycle, allowing for continuous operation.

Heatless desiccant dryers remove moisture from compressed air by adsorbing it via desiccant material, delivering ultra-dry air that protects equipment from corrosion, freezing, and contamination.

By providing consistently low dew points without relying on external heat, these desiccant dryers ensure pneumatic systems, instrumentation, and downstream processes operate smoothly and reliably, helping to maintain system integrity and extend equipment lifespan.
