Desiccant air dryers use materials such as activated alumina or silica gel to adsorb moisture from compressed air. The system typically includes two towers, and while one tower dries the air, the other regenerates the saturated desiccant. This cycling process allows for continuous drying and consistent performance, making desiccant dryers ideal for environments where moisture-sensitive equipment or processes are in use.

Desiccant dryers remove moisture from compressed air, preventing product contamination and protecting pneumatic systems and sensitive instrumentation. By ensuring dry, clean air, these dryers help preserve system integrity and support reliable, long-term performance.

Not all desiccant air dryers use the same desiccant material. The most commonly used desiccants are activated alumina, molecular sieve, and silica gel, but their use depends on the dryer type and application:

  • Activated Alumina is the most widely used and is found in nearly all dryer types, including modular and twin-tower designs. It offers excellent performance and durability across standard operating conditions.
  • Molecular Sieve is used when very low dew points (as low as –70°C) are needed, such as in pharmaceutical or electronics applications. It’s often found in low dew point or externally heated dryers.
  • Silica Gel is less commonly used but may be suitable for specific applications where moderate drying is acceptable.

Chamco’s desiccant dryers, including heatless, heated, modular, and high-pressure models, can be configured with different desiccant types based on your air quality needs, dew point requirements, and operating environment.

A heatless desiccant dryer removes moisture from compressed air by adsorbing it onto a desiccant material such as activated alumina or silica gel. In a heatless system, regeneration is achieved without external heat, using a portion of the already dried compressed air to purge moisture from the desiccant. This process makes heatless dryers energy-efficient and ideal for smaller systems or applications where simplicity and reliability are key. Other desiccant dryer systems may use heated air or a blower for regeneration, which can reduce purge air loss and increase efficiency in high-demand or continuous-use environments.

Heatless dryers are available in twin tower, single tower, and inline configurations and are suitable for applications requiring low dew points and reliable operation where heated regeneration is impractical.

Desiccant air dryers are used in applications where moisture in compressed air can cause equipment damage, product contamination, or process disruptions.

Common industries and uses include:

  • Food and Beverage: To prevent moisture from contaminating products or packaging.
  • Pharmaceuticals: For maintaining sterile, dry air in production and packaging environments.
  • Electronics: Where even trace amounts of moisture can damage sensitive components.
  • Painting: To ensure smooth, defect-free finishes by removing water vapour from the air supply.
  • Pneumatic Controls: In manufacturing, mining, and transportation systems, where dry air ensures reliable performance.
  • Petrochemical and Refining: To protect instruments and processes from corrosion and freeze-up.

Desiccant dryers are ideal for applications requiring dewpoints ranging from 0°C down to -70°C.
